As you can tell, I had a fun week! We went canoeing down the river! My niece loved it! It was a lot of fun! We also went to the drive in. Planes 2 Fire and Rescue was playing. My niece was so excited! I really love the concept of a drive in movie theater. It seems like the tradition is dying, which I find extremely sad! A lot of drive-ins had to close once everything went to digital. Luckily the one close by my hometown is still in business.  Going to drive in movie theaters is something different than the norm. Comment and let me know if you ever go to a drive in movie theater. I would love to hear from you all!

Kat Von D Monarch Eye Shadow Palette Review

eye shadow

I blame YouTube and Kat Von D herself for me buying the butterfly eye shadow palette collection. Awhile back, Sephora’s YouTube channel had released a video of Kat Von D herself introducing her two new palettes. The two palettes from this collection are called Monarch and Chrysalis.¬†If you have been following me, it may be no surprise to you that I love palettes. So I had to jump on the opportunity to purchase them. I first will be doing the Monarch palette review and then soon after I will be doing the Chrysalis review.

A SEPHORA OVERVIEW
All information down below in italics can be found on the Sephora site found here.

What it is:¬†An alluring, warm-toned eyeshadow palette with a stunning composition of colors‚ÄĒthree large base shades and nine transformative accent hues‚ÄĒfor a spectrum of stunning eye looks.¬†

What it does: From delicate to daring, experience a rebirth of color and explore endless eye looks with the Monarch Eyeshadow Palette. Featuring warm-toned shades in an ingenious arrangement that gives you the biggest basics and the most accent hues, now you’ll have the freedom to create your heart out without running out of the go-to colors. Relish in the luxurious texture of triple-milled powder, which picks up instantly and lays down with a one-sweep, full-coverage application. The patented Power Last‚ĄĘ, long-wearing formula gives you buildable, from dawn-to-dusk drama, while an infusion of antioxidants including rose extract and vitamins A, C, and E all work to keep your eyelids hydrated and protected.¬†

What else you need to know:¬†Inspired by the metamorphosis of the butterfly, Kat created this palette to give you endless ways to transform your eyes every day. The palette is decorated with original artwork derived from her love of butterflies‚ÄĒa symbol of rebirth and renewal. Follow Kat’s tutorials for tips and inspiration.

PACKAGING

Something about Kat Von D’s palettes are they all have amazing packaging! ¬†With Kat Von D being an artist herself, she of course designs her own palettes covers. You can tell that she spends a lot of time perfecting each and every detail of her design. This palette cover is probably one of my favorites of the ones I have seen of her brand. I love butterflies! I even have a tattoo of a butterfly. I feel like a butterfly symbolizes freedom because it has the ability to fly wherever it wants to. Maybe, that sounds cheesy, but that is what my tattoo symbolizes¬†to me. Anyway, the cover has a monarch butterfly on it as you can see in the photo below. The cover to this palette is so very her, especially since she added the skulls to the end of the butterfly wings. The back of the palette has a lot of detail in it as well because on each side of the names there is the same butterfly wings. This palette feels very sturdy and does have a magnetic closure. I know I heard a lot of people were upset that it wasn’t her usual tin packaging. Well, I actually like this cardboard type of packaging over her normal tin. The inside of the palette has a nice sized mirror which isn’t that important to me because I never use those mirrors. But, it would be nice for travel purposes.

PRICING AND SIZE

The price of this palette is $46.00 which is expensive, but most palettes from Sephora are around that price range. That is because it is more of a “prestige” brand. Also, remember that this is a Sephora only exclusive brand. You can either buy it in store or online. Also, with the always moving makeup industry this palette won’t be available for much longer. I assume she is working on her next palette by now. It is crazy that some makeup brands are already bringing out Fall 2014 collections! Aaaahhh…. slow down! It is still Summer!

On the back of the palette it says, “Keep your look ever-changing, highlight eyes with 3 textural bases and accentuate with 9 transformative colors.”¬†According to Sephora the amount of shadows included are: 3 x 0.095 oz and¬†9 x 0.049 oz. Those are pretty nice sizes if you ask me. More information found here.¬†

THE SHADES
This palette comes with a bunch of different finishes and shades. This is a very warm toned palette with brown, gold, copper, and orange shades. This palette has shimmery, pearl, and matte finishes as well. Because of that, there is a multitude of looks that a person could come up with using this palette. ¬†I am horrible at describing colors, so I am showing you the descriptions off of Sephora’s website for each of the shades. I would try and describe them, but I feel like the most important part of the review is the use and ease of the shadows.

FORMULATION

What I love about eye shadow is each makeup brand has a different formulation for their shadows. Some are better than others and some are more expensive than others as well. But, pricing doesn’t necessarily mean anything. Something that I noticed about the formula from this palette is that they’re super soft. Due to the softness, it makes them very powdery. ¬†If you put too much on your brush the shadow will go everywhere. So what I recommend is a light hand.¬†With that being said, I really do enjoy the formula. The shadows being powdery does not bother me at all because they’re soft and easy to work with. It does have some fall out so usually I do my foundation afterwards. But, the fallout isn’t terrible either. The shadows are super pigmented so only a little amount is needed. My favorite shades are the first 3 of the tranformative shadows: wrath, papillo, and summerfly. Using those shadows creates a gorgeous look! Another thing that I love about this palette is that it is formulated without parabens, sulfates, and phthalates. That is a big time pro for me!¬†¬†I think that this palette is perfect for Fall, but in all reality could be used all year around.

PROS

  • Gorgeous and unique packaging
  • Softness of shadows
  • Pigmentation
  • Only need a tiny amount so palette will last a long time
  • Size/amount of shadows included
  • Study palette with mirror included
  • Paraben, sulfate, and phthlate free
  • Made in the USA

CONS

  • Price
  • Powdery
  • Limited Edition
  • Only available through Sephora

A RANDOM FOTD

IMG_20140508_152030862

Overall, I highly recommend picking up this palette if you get the chance. This is such a fun warm toned palette and I have had a lot of fun creating looks using it. So far, I am quite impressed with Kat Von D’s makeup brand. Recently, I picked up one of her blushers so that review will be coming up soon. Comment down below if you have this palette or are thinking about picking it up. I love reading your comments!

I got a lot of goodies! Comment and let me know if you want to see some OOTD posts!

bareMinerals
I actually ordered this online when bareMinerals had a 20% sale. I really wanted to try this Bareskin serum foundation. I got mine in the shade bare porcelain which is the lightest shade. I was actually surprised I was the lightest shade, but I was matched at Ulta (they were out of my color at the time) and it does match.

IKEA
The main reason from coming down to the cities was a trip to Ikea. Awhile back on my dad’s way back from the cities he made a little stop for me. I was going insane with my organization and knew he was driving by so I got the Alex 9 drawer. It is gorgeous! But, the top drawer had no holes in the piece. ūüė¶ Well, I thought about drilling my own holes, but I figured I would just have to make a trip to Ikea sometime. My Ikea Alex now looks lovely with a new drawer.

GLO-MINERALS
My local salon just got this new makeup and skincare line called Glo-Minerals. Awhile back, I got invited to this little class/presentation presented by someone from Glo-Minerals. I have never tried anything from this brand, but I decided why not?!? Time for some The Beauty Deputy research! I’m glad that I went because this brand sounds awesome. It is made of 100% minerals, it is cruelty free, and so much more! I did not get all the items listed below all at this one makeup party. Later on, I decided to pick up the brush cleaner and the cherry balm. The lip-glosses were free with purchase. Also, I got the dual foundation brush from my mom because she decided that she didn’t want it.

Beauty Blogger Collaboration: Makeup Through The Ages -1960

1907337_10201859612924643_1540852947928680308_n

Do you see the title of this blog collaboration?!?! I am beyond ecstatic to be doing this wonderful “Makeup Through the Ages” post with a bunch of other amazing beauty bloggers from all over the world! Awhile back I had asked my followers to take part in this awesome collaboration with me! ¬†ūüôā As you may know, makeup has changed quite a bit throughout time. Our blog collaboration will take our readers on a journey through the ages starting with Egyptians, skipping numerous years, then the roaring 1920s to present day, and then of course futuristic! I can’t wait to see what all the other ladies came up with!

My Decade

Untitled

I picked the 1960s for a couple of reasons! I love the music! I am a big classic rock fan. I love the song, “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals. I posted a YouTube video just in case you have never heard of it! I, of course, also loved THE BEATLES! They’re one of my favorite bands!

A Little History Lesson!

1960 JFK (John F. Kennedy) beats Richard Nixon in the¬†presidential¬†election to become the 35th US President. The book “To Kill a Mockingbird” was published.
1961 “West Side Story” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” comes to the big screen.
1962 Marilyn Monroe dies of an overdose. World wide television and cable became a reality. Eleanor Roosevelt dies. My amazing mum is born!
1963 The Beatles take Britain by storm. JFK is assassinated. My amazing dad is born!
1964 Bob Dylan becomes popular. Color television! The first primetime Soap Opera “Peyton¬†Place” appears on¬†television. Martin Luther King Jr. gets the Nobel Peace Prize.
1965¬†“The Sound of Music” premieres. Martin Luther King Jr. works on the Voting Rights Act.
1966 The first “Star Trek” episode aires. Walt Disney dies.
1967 PBS is created. “The Jungle Book” comes out.¬†
1968 “60 Minutes” first airs. The movie rating system starts (PG, PG-13, Rated R, etc.) Martin Luther King Jr. dies.
1969¬†“Sesame Street” was born. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the moon.

Information found here and here.

The 1960s Beauty Trends

I did do some research online, but I got most of my information from my grandparents who grew up in the 1960s.

  • Dramatic makeup looks.
  • Pedal Pushers! Which in today’s age are known as capris.
  • The mini skirt makes its way into fashion!
  • Big Hair!!!! Lots of volume! Remember the movie “Hairspray” and their crazy volume?!? That takes place in the 1960s.
  • A lot of black liner!
  • Cut creases (mostly used black)
  • Nude lips also became popular in the 1960s. But, my grandma said that in the early 1960s, red lips were super popular!
  • Colorful eye looks!
  • Thick full lashes on both the bottom and top as worn by Twiggy in the 1960s.
  • The Nurses hat! (So glad I don’t have to wear that in my nursing career)!

MAKEUP

When I first decided I was going to do the decade of the 1960s, I of course, wanted to do a blue eye-shadow look because it just screams the 1960s in my opinion. When I was talking to my grandmas, they both said blue eye-shadow was the craze. I have never done a cut crease, so my look is going to be a little softer than the Twiggy version of a cut crease with an intense black line.

IMG_20140615_173912281

I love my Nyx Jumbo pencil in milk because it definitely helps eyeshadows pop, especially a blue shade. I layered that on top of my Lorac Behind the Scenes Eye Primer.¬†The white base does not need to be perfect because, well, it will be turning blue here soon…

primer

I recently got the Mac Fix+ because I visited my first ever Mac store and felt like this was a good purchase. Basically, I sprayed my eyeshadow brush with this Mac Fix+ to moisten it and that helped make the shadow more pigmented and  give it a more harsh look.

perfect duo

There I am adding the crazy blue shadow single which is from the amazing brand of Urban Decay and in the shade Peace. I recently got a new makeup mirror, as you can see in the photo, and I love it! I will be doing a post on that sometime soon.

blue shadow

I never ever wear winged eyeliner, so I’ll be honest, this was really new to me. Therefore, ….. TAPE! I applied tape so I would get it even. Placement of the winged eyeliner is supposed to follow the bottom lash line into a wing. But, before you add fresh tape onto your poor little delicate under eyes, put it on your hand first to take away some of the stickiness. I used 2 different eyeliners for this look. The first one I used is by Collection and it is their 24 hour felt tip eyeliner. I used that along the lashline and the wing (basically the whole eyeliner part). The second eyeliner was just a little blacker, so I added that eyeliner on top of the one from Collection. That eyeliner is from The Balm and it is their Schwing liquid eyeliner.

eyeliner

This was probably the hardest part of the look. Making it look like a “cut crease.” As you can see in the photo, I just took the shade Blackout and applied it in the crease. I did blend it a little bit so it isn’t quite the same as Twiggy. But, you get the point. I also applied some Blackout shadow under my lash line as well.

adding in the black

Time for mascara! I decided to try the Rimmel London Scandaleyes Retro Glam mascara. I really wanted dark¬†voluminous¬†lashes and I didn’t want to have to put fakes ones on, so this was the next best thing.

macara

I wanted to add a little shimmer to my look, therefore, The Balm’s Overshadow in Work is OverRated comes to the stage.

finishing touch

Apparently in the 1960’s¬†a lot of people would¬†shave off their eyebrows and draw them on. They did draw them in on the heavier side and more of a straight line. Yeah, I’m not going to do that.

brows

I used the products that I usually use from day to day. In the 1960s they liked more of a matte over a dewy finish. I used Porefessional from Benefit for a primer. Then, my tarte Amazonian clay foundation in Light Sand. Finally, I finished off with my bareMinerals Mineral Veil powder.

face

Time for some bronzer, highlighter, and some blush. I hardly ever wear bronzer, ever! But, I decided to use my Pur Minerals Mineral Glow. The highlighter I used is the famous Mary-Lou Manizer from The Balm. In the 1960s they wore a lot of coral blush. Hence, I thought that my Sleek blush in the shade coral would be perfect to add to this look.

bronzer

I really wish that I would have worn a nude lipstick, because I have the perfect one. I did wear a red lipstick because my grandma had said that in the early 1960s, red was popular and that during that time they came out with more shades: nudes, pinks, etc. I just finally had a reason to wear a red lipstick. I used my Urban Decay Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Color in the shade Theodora. I got it in my Theodora palette from The Great and Powerful Oz.

lips

HAIR

1) In the 1960s, they wore a lot of hair accessories. So I decided to use my headband (from Maurices) for some extra 1960s style. I just parted my hair on the side and put the headband into place. Then I combed back the rest of the hair that was behind the headband.
2) Since they ratted their hair a lot to get extreme volume I decided to try this voluminizing powder from Not Your Mothers. It did work pretty well, because I was able to comb through my ratted hair with no difficulty. Do not try ratting your hair without using a powder like this, otherwise it will be a snarly mess.
3) After applying the powder in the roots, I took a comb and started ratting.
4) For some extra volume I decided to have a little mini bun that the ratted hair from step 3 will cover.
5) I just continued to rat all my hair around the headband, until it looked something like this…
6) Pin back the hair with a bobby pin making sure to cover the bun. I did have a flower clip that I placed over the bobby pins. You will be able to see it in the photos below.

hair

THE COMPLETED LOOK

This is my completed look. I really like that it looks very 1960s. Comment if you agree?!? This eye look is obviously not an everyday look, but they sure loved their blue eyeshadow back then.

completed makeup

FASHION

This is probably where I had the most fun with this collaboration. Picking out my outfit!! I feel like the neckline of the shirt I’m wearing is perfect! In the 1960s they wore a lot of rounded collar necklines, whether¬†it be a shirt or a dress, that style was in. It is also a perfect blue shade! I of course spotted this shirt at Maurices. No surprise there! My pedal pushers or capris (whatever you prefer to call them) are also from Maurices. They didn’t usually wear blue jean pedal pushers (like in today’s age), but more khaki or colorful ones instead. My black flats I have had forever, but I’m 99.9% sure I got them at Famous Footwear. My necklace I felt was very fitting for this decade with the silver hoops. That is from the jewelry company, “Premier Designs.” Both my earrings and bracelet are from Maurices. They would wear big hoop earrings, but this was the most dangly earring I had.

outfit 1

outfit 2

SOME SHIBA INU LOVE…
Since hardly anybody has heard of a Shiba Inu in today’s age, I’m sure Shiba Inus were quite rare then. But, that didn’t stop me from taking some photos with my pup Mirya! She is so photogenic!

shiba

That concludes this post! I hope that you enjoyed reading it. Let me know what you think of my makeup, hair, and outfit. I had a lot of fun doing this. Doing 1960s makeup and hair isn’t the easiest, so I am glad that I don’t have to rat my hair like they did back in the day. Also, so glad that I don’t have to wear those white nurses hats. Make sure to check out all the other lovely ladies’ posts that are part of this.

May 2014 Monthly Favorites: Beauty, Fashion, & Lifestyle!

May was sure a busy month! It flew by so fast, that I am still in shock that it is already June! Life has been pretty busy with work and moving out of my house. I have been neglecting the blogging side of things a little bit. ūüė¶ Although, I did start a new blog during that time, so I¬†don’t feel too neglectful! I had a hard time narrowing down what I wanted to include in my monthly favorites. I loved a lot of things this month! But, I do have quite a few monthly favorites that I want to share with you all! I hope you enjoy! Also, make sure to comment and let me know if you have tried any of these products and what you think of them! I hope you enjoy!

MAKEUP & SKINCARE

IMG_20140605_160059920

Cindy-Lou Manizer from The Balm

What the Balm says, “An all-in-one essential, this smart shadow, beautiful blush and subtle highlighter is tucked inside a go-anywhere compact. The light-reflecting peachy pink hue adds a splash of color to your cheeks and a hint of shimmer to your lids, while illuminating your finest features.” Information found here.¬†

IMG_20140602_153927412

I haven’t had this beauty product¬†for that long, but I really do like the shade. It can be used as a highlighter, shimmer, or a shadow. I use mine as a highlighter, it just gives the face a pretty peachy-pink highlight. I love the packaging as well! The Balm always gets an A+ on packaging in my book! I also have the Mary-Lou Manizer version¬†of this, love that one as well. That one is more of a champagne shade. They’re both super pigmented so you only need a little bit!

Setting Brush by Real Techniques

What Real Techniques says, “The key to completing any look with a controlled dusting of powder or highlighter.” ¬†More information found here.

IMG_20140602_153943797

This brush goes hand in hand with the monthly favorite described above. I use this brush for highlighting because I think that it is the perfect size. The brush is super soft and easy to use. RT brushes are also cruelty free which is important to me. This brush could also be used for blending out concealer.

The Body Shop Body Butter in Strawberry

What The Body Shop says, “This rich and creamy Body Butter is a feast for the skin. It melts straight in to leave skin feeling soft and smooth. It contains Community Fair Trade shea butter and has a sweet strawberry scent. 24-hour hydration Great for normal to dry skin Sweet strawberry scent.” More information found here.¬†

IMG_20140605_232700735

This was my first purchase ever from The Body Shop. I am a HUGE fan of strawberries so I of course had to pick this one up. I actually ordered this mini body butter online so I didn’t get to test it out first. This stuff smells AMAZING! It is like strawberries on steroids! The body butter is nice and creamy and has the perfect thickness. It¬†is perfect for during the day for a quick hand cream and it does help moisturize my hands. I usually use more of a thicker more moisturizing hand cream at night.

Kat Von D Monarch Eyeshadow Palette

What Sephora says, “An alluring, warm-toned eyeshadow palette with a stunning composition of colors‚ÄĒthree large base shades and nine transformative accent hues‚ÄĒfor a spectrum of stunning eye looks. ” More information found here.¬†

IMG_20140605_160217707

I am in love with this palette! I love all the colors included. The shadows are super pigmented and just gorgeous! ¬†I just find it to be a super¬†unique palette, because it includes some shades that I have never seen before. The packaging is amazing¬†and it is very fitting for Kat Von D and her personality. Well, it should be because she drew the palette design. I have 3 Kat Von D items from her line, which are all palettes. So far, I am quite impressed with her makeup line and I’m curious about her other makeup items. What products have you tried from her line?!? I don’t want to give out too much information about this palette. I have a review coming up on this palette and the sister palette Chrysalis, which is gorgeous as well!

Sigma Beauty Single Eye Shadow in Triomphe

What Sigma Beauty says, “The Sigma Beauty Individual Eye Shadow Collection features a versatile assortment of shades and finishes from our best-selling eye shadow palettes. ¬†Each eye shadow has a rich pigmentation and long-lasting wear. Mix and match for your favorite colors to create a customized collection.” More information found here.¬†

IMG_20140602_153828417

When I was at Mall of America a few months ago, I got this shadow for free with a purchase. I had a hard time deciding what shade to pick out! I decided on the shade Triomphe, which is a duo-chrome pewter. This shade is actually part of the Paris palette. This shade is super gorgeous and I love the duo-chrome finish to it. It is also pigmented and blends easily! This shade is perfect for the outer V and even could be used all over the lid for a more darker look.

Jamberry Nails!!!

This is probably my biggest monthly favorite! I have a love for having something pretty on my nails! Being a nurse my nail polish chips right away with constant hand washing. Meet the company Jamberry Nails! ūüėÄ Basically these are high quality vinyl nail wraps, which is such a smart idea! ¬†I have so far applied 2 different Jambicures and so far I love them! They don’t chip! They last a lot longer than any nail polish! My first Jambicure was Chalkboard Hearts and my second Jambicure was Flutter By. Flutter By was a May exculsive, I am glad that I got my hands on a sheet of this adorable butterfly design. I will be doing an actual review on these vinyl nails, so stay tuned for that!

FASHION

I loved this dress from Maurices this month! I paired it with my new madden girl sandals that I got at Famous Footwear! I really like how this outfit turned out. Also, I got the white little cardigan at Maurices as well. Surprise! Love that store!

Here is another dress that I got at Maurices! ūüôā I paired it with that same white cardigan. I love this dress and I love the color orange! You can find this dress here.

LIFESTYLE

Movies

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
I really love the new Spider-man movies, along with a bunch of other people. Lol! I really like Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Personally, I think that this Spider-Man film has been the best Spider-Man movie so far (including the Tobey Mcquire ones)! There were funny parts in it and there were sad parts in it as well. Overall, I think that it was really well done. Comment and let me know if you have seen this movie.

Endless Love
Yes, this movie is a chic flick and a little cheesy, but I think it is adorable! There is nothing wrong with watching a “feel good movie.” Not everything has to be blood and gore and guts!

Games

Pikmin 3
Recently I sold my Iphone back to Best Buy in place of a gift card. I ended up getting the Nintendo Wii U. I have always been a fan of Nintendo with Yoshi being a favorite character of mine. It was a super nice deal, ¬†I got a lot back for my Iphone! I got this game called Pikmin 3! I actually played the original Pikmin game back in the day on GameCube, with one of my good friends all the time. It is an all time favorite of mine! So fast forward to Pikmin 3, and I still love it! Although, with life being so busy, I haven’t been able to play it much. I figured it would be easier for me just to show you a preview of the game. I know some people probably think it is silly, but I love it! Aren’t the Pikmin adorable?!?

Shows

Revenge
Revenge has had its moments! Honestly, part of this season I wanted to quit watching this show. There was too many characters and I got lost with the story line. But, thankfully I kept watching because it all ended with the season finale! This season finale was intense! I can’t wait to see what happens! Comment and let me know if you watch Revenge.

Dancing with the Stars
I loved watching this show and I think that it was one of this best seasons of DWTS ever! I just think that they had a lot of good celebrities, which kept the show interesting. I watched Meryl & Charlie win the gold at the Olympics, that was a big reason why I watched this season more faithfully. I was happy to see Meryl and Maks win!

MIRYA, MADDIE, & MOLLY MONTHLY FAVORITES

If you want to see my pets monthly favorites then I suggest you check out my pet¬†blog that I recently started called, “The HAPPY PAW Files.” I have a post about their paw approved monthly favorites going up at the same time as this one! I hope you subscribe and show Mirya, Molly, and Maddie some love! You can find that blog post here.

That concludes this monthly favorites post! I hope you enjoyed reading this! Comment and let me know what you thought and if you have tried any of the products mentioned. Also, let me know if you have watched any of the shows or movies, or played Pikmin 3 as well!

May 2014 Ipsy Glam Bag: Beauty’s Fresh Picks

Time for another Ipsy Glam bag post! How can that be?!? I know, I know, I always say this, but jeeze time goes by fast! If you don’t know what Ipsy is, then you have been living under a tree! No, just kidding! It is a $10 beauty subscription service that sends 4-6 makeup, skincare, or any type of beauty¬†product in a cosmetic bag.

May’s Theme

Beauty’s Fresh Picks

IMG_20140514_170217407

The Bag

I actually really liked this month’s bag. It seems like nice quality and more earth friendly. This bag is actually one of my favorite bags from Ipsy.

IMG_20140514_170203756

The Items

A few skincare items and a couple makeup items. ūüôā

IMG_20140514_170609872

1) Therapy Session Hair Mask by Eva NYC

According to Ipsy’s website, “The Therapy Session Hair Mask deeply conditions, repairs and strengthens dry and damaged hair. Argan Oil nourishes and revitalizes, while Keravis Protein drastically increases hair‚Äôs strength and elasticity. The results are hydrated, soft and manageable hair.”

IMG_20140514_170237531

I was excited to receive this item because I always like trying out hair masks. I do highlight my hair, doing that causes some dryness and damage. This item seemed like a pretty good size for a subscription box. The texture of my hair is pretty fine. I have not used this item yet and I probably will post this post before I use it, but I will update you on if I like it or not with a review.

2) Classic Sport SPF50 by Hang Ten

According to Ipsy’s website, “Protect and nourish your skin with our clear, lightweight, naturally scented sunscreen. Provides maximum water resistance and full body coverage against harmful UVA/UVB rays. “

IMG_20140514_170309518

This is how I feel about receiving this item…..¬†:/ Not excited at all! Although, it will probably be pretty useful. I am pretty fair skinned and definitely need to use sunscreen. Skin Cancer…bad! Therefore, thank you Ipsy for trying to take care of my skin. ¬†I suppose it does fit with the theme. But, really I can buy sunscreen anywhere. But, it is nice to be able to try out this one. I hate those sun screens where I can feel like it is on and when it is greasy. This sunscreen promises to be non-greasy. I did put a little bit on my arm and it seemed like it wasn’t greasy at all. Yay! It also has a light scent that actually smells nice, unlike the usual sunscreen scent ( it is synthetic fragrance free). This sunscreen is SPF 50 which is nice. Also, this sunscreen has natural ingredients in it which is a big pro. It is cruelty free!¬†

3) Mineral Eyeshadow Duo by Pacifica

What Ipsy says, “The Pacifica Mineral Eyeshadow Duo are coconut infused mineral eye shadows that are a perfect addition to any makeup collection. Packaged in a beautiful travel ready recyclable container, these exclusive duos are customized just for ipsy! These shades can be found in the Pacifica Mystical and Charmed Palette. Smooth application with gorgeous color pay-off.”

PicMonkey Collage 2

I was really excited to try out some Pacifica eye-shadows, because I love their lip tints. Their lip tints are actually a holy grail of mine. Pacifica is known for being more of a natural company so I really like them for that. I do wish that I would have gotten the duo¬†with the purple and white shade instead. But, oh well! It was still nice to be able to try their shadows.¬†This duo was nothing special. The shadows aren’t crazy pigmented, but they aren’t horrible either. I would say right in the middle. The formula is powdery. I feel like these shadows would have done better over a white or colored base to help the colors pop more because as you can see in my look above, the shades are hard to see.

4) Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer

What Ipsy says, “Bronzing has never been so delicious. The Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer is a shimmer-free, matte bronzer perfect for contouring and creating an all-over deep tan using real antioxidant-rich cocoa powder. It‚Äôs all the tan without the twinkle. Infused with antioxidant-rich cocoa powder and signature bronzing pigments to create a unique matte bronzer that neutralizes red and evens skin tone. “

IMG_20140514_170324444

I actually have this bronzer in a Too Faced palette of mine, I have yet to really use it. I tend to shy away from bronzers. I have nothing against them, but usually I am in a hurry when doing makeup so I just end up skipping this step. I also don’t really know the best way to apply it either. But, maybe I should start because practice makes perfect. Since I already have this bronzer, Jacquelyn from The Little Scottish Corner will be receiving this in our upcoming box swaps. I do love the scent of this bronzer; chocolate! ūüôā

 5) Avene Thermal Water

What Ipsy says, “Known for its long history in treating atopic dermatitis, the Av√®ne Thermal Spring Water is the only thermal spring water bottled directly from the source and packaged in a sterile environment to guarantee purity and maximum skin benefits. Its unique composition is proven to soothe inflammation, itching, redness, general sensitivity and post-medical and aesthetic procedure irritation as it softens, protects and purifies the skin. Av√®ne Thermal Spring Water is recommended by dermatologists worldwide. “

PicMonkey Collage

I feel like I am the perfect person to test this product out. I may not have that much redness on my face, but I sure do on my hands. That photo was taken¬†after work. Also, in real life it was more red than in the photo. Working as a nurse means a lot of gloves and a lot of hand washing. My hands are sensitive and end up getting red and rashy as the shift goes on. I have been battling this through winter and I am hoping that it will come to an end soon. It really makes me sad when they say, “they can determine the age of a woman, by her hands.” ūüė¶ ¬†This product promises to reduce inflammation, itching, redness, and a few others as stated above in the description. The second photo of my hands is a picture of the product sprayed onto my hands. I wouldn’t say that it kept all of its promises, but it did help a little with each category for the most part. It was soothing to my itchy hands and it took the redness down with time (hands looked better in the morning). I did feel like it dried my hands out a bit, but with lotion it was better. I wouldn’t repurchase this item, but I am going to continue using it to see if I get further results and my opinion changes.

Overall, I really liked this bag! It was more based on skincare than makeup, but it is always nice that Ipsy changes it up a bit each and every month. I love getting my Ipsy bag and will continue to subscribe to Ipsy! Comment and let me know if you get Ipsy and what you thought of this bag this month.

Beauty Box 5: Fresh and Focused

I told myself that I would give Beauty Box 5 one more month to let me decide if I wanted to cancel it or not. I feel like BB5 boxes have been a “sort of” hit or a really big miss. If you don’t know what Beauty Box 5 is then I suggest you keep on reading. Beauty Box 5 or BB5 is a $12 monthly beauty subscription service that sends out 5 products ranging from makeup to skincare to nails. I have had BB5 for quite a few months now so if you’re interested in seeing some other items included in past BB5 boxes then check out my previous blog posts in the menu area of my blog.

Something that I love about BB5 (that I wish Ipsy could learn from) is that they include a card inside. This card describes each product included and has their full retail value and the brand’s social media information as well. Each month also has a theme, which is normal for most subscription boxes.

This month’s theme is….

fresh and focused

IMG_20140512_152508906_HDR

This month is all about getting that beauty boost. Daydreaming about the beach? Need a pick-me-up? Why, Yes BB5 I am daydreaming about the beach. I live in Minnesota (the land of 10,000 lakes) and I’m pretty sure the lakes are quite cold still, we have not had too many warm days yet.

As stated above, this box includes 5 items. The descriptions about each product were found on the card included and are in italics as well.

1) MaskerAide Hydrating Facial Sheet Mask

Retail: $5.99 for 1 mask

Perfect for a quick lunch-time facial, these hydrating sheet masks are paraben-free, vegan¬†friendly, and aren’t messy at all. Bonus: they’re also 100% biodegradable, making them great for your face AND for the planet. #maskeraide

This was the most exciting product this month.  First off, the packaging is adorable! Second, I have never tried a sheet face mask. Usually, I tend to forget about doing face masks. When I do get around to it, I usually go for my Lush Mask of Magnanimity face mask. Third, it is cruelty free, paraben free, and earth friendly. What is not to love?!? I just used up this mask very recently and after application, I decided to go scare a few members of my family with it. My mom said she is going to have nightmares. Lol! My dad just laughed! My brother thought I looked scary! As you can see in the photo below, I even included a scary photo with me trying to make a scary face. My cat looked at me weird and my dogs barked at me. They were probably wondering what was wrong with their human!

PicMonkey Collage 2

They say application isn’t messy at all. Compared to other face masks, I totally have to agree. I mean there is some of the product from the sheet that will get on your hands, but nothing compared to others. I must have a weird shaped face because I had a hard time getting it to fit properly. But, I got it as a good as it could get. The part between my nose and my chin did not want to stick at all, but the rest of it stuck pretty well. The part around my chin kept wanting to lift up. But, all in all application was easy breezy. It says to use this mask for 10-20 minutes. Well, 20 minutes is a long time to sit with an annoying face mask on the face! Heck no! I made it about 10 minutes before I took the mask off my face. The reason is because it was wet and slimy and just didn’t sit the best on my face so it was a big annoyance. It did make my skin soft at the end, but it wasn’t amazing enough to make me want to go out and buy one. If I would have done the full time, I’m sure my skin would have been even softer! Overall, I think that it was an awesome item to include and I was very happy to try it out!

2) H20 Plus Aqualibrium Marine Cleansing Gel

Retail: $18.00 for 120 ml

Put your best face forward! Made with sea salt and energizing marine botanicals, this oil-free cleanser gently exfoliates while protecting your pretty cheeks from free radicals and environmental damage. #h2oplus

This isn’t the first time that BB5 included this brand. I really do like the smell of this stuff. It does remind me of the sea which isn’t surprising. I hate that this sample is so small, but hopefully I will be able to get a few uses out of this sample. I did actually like this item. Not enough to go out and buy it right away. But, if I was in need of a facial cleansing gel, I would pick this up. I did like that is was a gel and I did feel like it cleaned my face pretty well. You can see my Jamberry nails in Chalkboard Hearts in case you were wondering what was on my nails.

IMG_20140512_152636487

Ban Total Refresh Cooling Body Cloths

Retail: $2.97 10 cloths

Stay calm and cool! Break out these cloth wipes after the gym, during a long day at work, or before a hot date to ensure you smell fresh and feel smooth! Just unfold and give yourself a quick rub down! #bandeodorant

I wasn’t that excited about getting this samples in my BB5. Don’t get me wrong, it is a good idea, but still I would have rather got a different item in my BB5. These wipes remind me of baby powder and baby wipes, but when I rubbed it on my arm, the scent did not transmit. There wasn’t a residue on my arm either. It did really feel nice and cold on the skin which would be perfect for a refresh after a warm day or exercise. But, I will have to give these the true test after exercise. So as I type this, I have a flash back to marching band, wearing those uniforms made out of wool (they got new ones my last year of marching band, so much better!). Having these wipes would have been amazing after the parades. Imagine a bunch of sweaty people on a bus taking off wool uniforms during summer. Wouldn’t these have been wonderful?!? Lol, sorry for the image and tmi. Minnesota does get pretty warm during summer months, 80 F¬†¬†to 100 F.

IMG_20140512_152539144_HDR

Harvey Prince Hello

Retail: $55.00 5.7 oz

This pretty floral is the perfect way to transition from spring to summer! A smile in a bottle, each spritz boasts refreshing notes of mandarin, grapefruit, forsythia, and plumeria for a sunny and subtle signature. #harveyprince

I usually don’t like getting perfume samples at all in my subscription services, but I was actually excited to get this one. I honestly have never heard of Harvey Prince, but I just thought that the packaging was well presented which in the end made me excited for this little sample. It does smell really good as well. It reminds me of a nice summer day! I do smell a lot of lemon and mandarin notes, but it is nice and subtle as long as you use only a tiny bit. I think I will be definitely using this perfume throughout the summer.

PicMonkey Collage 3

Cattiva Precisione Eye Liner

Retail: $20.00 0.012 oz

Can’t live without the liner? We understand! Waterproof and retractable, this pencil is a must-have for minimalists and smokey eye queens, delivering smooth, smudge-resistant lines. And it’s paraben-free! #cattivacosmetics

I have never heard of this brand before, but it was nice that they included a full size eyeliner. I am actually in need of a black eyeliner, because the black liners that I have are liquid pens or more shimmery. I really do like that this liner is paraben free! I have not used this eyeliner yet so I am not sure how it will be for application and use. It did swatch nice and easily on my arm as shown below. Hopefully, it is a good eyeliner because they charge $20 for this! That is comparable to a lot of prestige cosmetics such as: Urban Decay, Stila,  Smashbox, etc.

PicMonkey Collage

So that concludes my 5 items included in the Beauty Box 5. Overall, I thought it was mediocre. I wasn’t wowed by it, but I didn’t think it was a miss either. I was excited to try out a sheet mask. I like that I got a full eyeliner. Although, I do think that I will be canceling my Beauty Box 5 subscription after this month. I just don’t feel like I need to keep both Ipsy and Beauty Box 5 and well…Ipsy won that battle in my opinion. ¬†Comment and let me know if you liked this post and what you thought of the items I got. Are you going to have nightmares and see the picture of me in my sheet face mask in your dreams now? Are you subscribed to Beauty Box 5?
