Day 29 Julep Birthstone Collection: April!

If you have been following me you know that I have been picking up the Birthstone Collection by Julep each month. This month I forgot to order it right away and then shipping took awhile. I’m sorry I’m sharing with you this post at the end of April, when it should have been at the beginning to middle of April.

The birthstone for the month of April is the diamond! My brother was born in April so he gets the diamond birthstone. When we were younger, he would always make fun of us because he was the diamond child or something like that.

According the The American Gem Society, “As the April birthstone, diamonds are the ideal gift for a loved one.  And now you have more choices than ever. Get creative and give the ultimate gift of beauty: a fancy-color diamond. Fancy-color diamonds are natural, rare and truly exotic gem of the earth.  Diamonds in hues of yellow, red, pink, blue, and green range in intensity from faint to vivid and generally the more saturated the color, the higher the value. In fact, diamonds sparkling with intense color are rare and may be priced higher than a colorless diamond of equal size.  Because fancy-color diamonds are very desirable, color is sometimes introduced in a laboratory. These are correctly called color-treated diamonds. When purchasing a fancy-color diamond, the shopper should ask if any enhancements or treatments were used to improve its color and/or clarity. – See more at:”

What Julep says about their April polish stated down below and in italics.

Breathable nail color—Color Treat is no ordinary nail polish.
Color description:Diamond birthstone. Full-coverage holographic microglitter with real diamond dust for extra sparkle. The amazing April jewel in our gold-capped Birthstone Collection.
Coretta – Diamond for April is a tribute to the luminous life and legacy of civil rights leader Coretta Scott King, born April 27.

I love that they name each polish after someone important in society!

Here is a picture of Coretta Scott King! She worked along side her husband Martin Luther King Jr. and was known as, “First Lady of the Civil Rights Movement,” Image and information found off the Julep Blog here.

Swatches from Julep

These photos were also found on their blog which is once again found here.

My Thoughts

The polish comes in its normal Julep style packaging. This polish does have a gold top compared to their normal black top. Amount included is small but their usual size at .27 fl oz or 8 ml.

I really love this color because it is one of those polishes that depending on the light it looks a different color.

Here are my swatches!

The Formula

I was really excited when I first saw the shade and was excited to paint my nails with this polish. I was very very disappointed with this formula. I will admit I’m not the best at painting my nails, but this polish was extremely hard to work with. It was super thick. You may or may not be able to tell how thick the polish was by the photo below.  It reminds me a lot of the consistency of January’s polish. I would describe the consistency a lot like a gel which is hard to spread across the nails without making a mess like I did. Also, this was my first time using it and it is already a third gone. The picture above is a picture of my 3 best nails that I painted. I ended up getting annoyed with this polish because some of them looked awful and a few of them that looked nice ended up getting smudged, lets just say the nail polish remover came out! It really makes me sad that I wasted my time painting my nails. Basically in order to get better results, I had to wipe pretty much all the polish off the brush, but then it would take multiple coats to make it more opaque. I really hope that this Julep Pile wand will help me with application and actually help me enjoy painting my nails. (I will be getting my May subscription box soon because they sent them out early!) But, I really think that the problem here was the formula. I really hope that they do much better with May.

Day 23: My Essie Nail Polish Collection

Over the years I have picked up quite a few Essie polishes. This brand is one of my favorite brands to use on my nails. I think that these nail polishes apply very nicely on the nail.  They’re also available at numerous stores so they’re very easy to find. I have a wide variety of colors, but I mostly have pink and purple colors. Comment and let me know if you have any of these colors and what you think of them!

Here are all 10 of my Essie polishes in a cute little pyramid!

I used the Essie website for the descriptions that I included next to the polish names. I did link the actually Essie website under each name for easier access as well. I got pretty much all of these polishes at Target.

My favorite polishes from my collection include: nothing else metals, it’s genius, mint candy apple, and for the twill of it. I really like the metallic finish of nothing else metals. Comment and let me know what colors you think I need to try. Looking at all the polishes on the Essie site is crazy because they have so many colors!  They have this new neon collection that I think looks gorgeous!

too taboo - pinks by essie chillsandthrills - blues by essie im addicted - blues by essie vices versa - greens by essie serial shopper - corals by essie sittin pretty - plums by essie

The pictures of the Neon Collection were found on Essie’s website here.  They’re so gorgeous! I especially love the turquoise, orange, and the purple. Ah! What the heck?!?The love them all!

I hope that you enjoyed this quick post!

Day 16: The Wizard of Oz Collection by Julep

When I first saw this collection I knew I had to have it! I love The Wizard of Oz! This movie recently celebrated its 75th Anniversary, so to celebrate Julep came out with this lovely collection of nail polishes.

The description is off of Julep’s website and can be found here.

Four gorgeous nail colors created in honor of the 75th anniversary of The Wizard of OzTM.

  • Emerald CityTM: Emerald crème
  • Tin ManTM: Silver holographic
  • Glinda the Good WitchTM: Pink frost
  • Ruby SlippersTM: Full-coverage red multidimensional glitter

I find the packaging to be amazing and very well done! It is super colorful and describes the movie very well.

I really like that they put all 4 characters on the back. Once again, I think the packaging is amazing.

The inner flap shows the yellow brick road to Emerald City. Yes, Mirya got a hold of this and chewed on the little flap. Luckily, I caught her before too much damage was done!

All the polishes have a certain spot with their corresponding image. This set includes 4 polishes: Ruby Slippers, Tin Man, Glinda the Good Witch, and Emerald City. Once again, love the packaging. Although, I do wish that there was a spot for the yellow brick road. I’m very surprised that they didn’t include a polish called, “Yellow Brick Road.” But, I guess we can’t have everything!

The spine

Here is a closer up picture of all the ingredients in each of the polishes. It also is cruelty free! 🙂

I apologize in advanced because these are not the best painted nails, but I really wanted to share this set with you. I am working on my nail polish painting skills. I just have a terrible time using my left hand because I am very dominant with using my right hand. I am excited to try Julep’s new system and see how that works.

Ruby Slippers

Dorothy’s red shoes were a big part of the movie so I’m glad they decided to include this one. This polish is a red glitter polish, I think they did a great job with matching the color and glitter to her shoes. I was nervous about trying this polish because I have had bad luck with other glitter polishes from Julep (February birthstone). I was pleasantly surprised. This formula was really easy to apply. It is very sheer with 1 coat, but if you add more than 1 coat it becomes more opaque. In the picture below I applied this polish to my ring finger as an accent nail. The polish on the other nails is Tin Man. I didn’t feel like doing all my nails in glittery red at that time. Sorry for the horrible picture quality. I took this photo with my Iphone.

Tin Man

This is my favorite polish out of any of them! This is a gorgeous holographic silver. The polish shows up differently in different lighting.  I would consider this my all time favorite silver polish and probably a good favorite of mine in my entire collection. The formula is super nice and easy to apply. It dried really fast, but I did use a fast drying top coat. The finish of this polish was just amazing. Good Job Julep on this color!

 Glinda the Good Witch

This polish is a very faint frost pink shade. It is meant to match Glinda’s dress. This formula is once again easy to apply. It does need at least 2 coats because it is such a light shade. I would have preferred it to be a little darker, but all in all they did a good job with matching her dress. This shade did smudge when I applied it because I’m impatient for waiting for nails to dry! I think a big reason why this smudged was because I didn’t use a fast drying top coat.

Emerald City

I really love this shade of green. I got a lot of compliments on the color. It is something different. Even someone told me that it reminded her of Emerald City. This is a creme polish. This polish applied really nice as well and it only needed 1 coat. It did chip really fast, but honestly I think that it was because Seche Vite doesn’t work for my nails.

These pictures looked a lot better on my Iphone, but now on the screen they don’t look as clear. Boo Iphone and bad lighting!

Hope you enjoyed this post! Let me know if you have this set or are interested in getting it after reading my review. Comment down below and let me know what you think!

Julep Birthstone Collection: March

After being super disappointed with February’s polish I debated on weather or not I wanted to continue with this collection. But, I decided that I couldn’t stop at February and wanted to give it another try.

March has two birthstones which include: Aquamarine and Bloodstone.

According to The American Gem Society, “The name aquamarine is derived from the Latin word aqua, meaning water, and marina, meaning the sea.  This gemstone was believed to protect sailors, as well as to guarantee a safe voyage.  The serene color of aquamarine is said to cool the temper, allowing the wearer to remain calm and levelheaded.  Its pale, cool color beautifully complements spring and summer wardrobes.  Aquamarine is most often light in tone and ranges from greenish blue to blue-green; the color usually is more intense in larger stones.  This gemstone is mined mainly in Brazil, but also is found in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, and Mozambique.” Information found off their website here

According to The American Gem Society, “The second birthstone for March is bloodstone, a dark-green jasper flecked with vivid red spots of iron oxide.  This ancient stone was used by the Babylonians to make seals and amulets and was believed to have healing powers — especially for blood disorders.  It is sometimes called the martyr’s stone as legend tells that it was created when drops of Christ’s blood stained some jasper at the foot of the cross.  Generally found embedded in rocks or in riverbeds as pebbles, primary sources for this stone are India, Brazil, and Australia.” See link above for more information.

Julep decided to go with the Aquamarine color.

Each month they name the polish after someone that was born in that certain month. This month’s Aquamarine polish is named Aretha for Aretha Franklin who was born March 25. In you’re interested you can find a biography in the link below.

What Julep says about this polish, “Aquamarine birthstone. Multi-dimensional glitter top coat. The March sparkler in our gold-capped. Birthstone CollectionAretha – Aquamarine for March is a tribute to a musical superstar. The soul queen, jazz diva, gospel godsend that is Aretha Franklin, born March 25.  More information here

With February’s polish, the picture on Julep’s site was very misleading. That polish was very sheer in real life, but in the picture it looked much more colorful. So with all the bad reviews, I think Julep learned their lesson because….

julep-aretha-aquamarine-glitter-top-coat-nail-polish_swatch julep-aretha-aquamarine-glitter-top-coat-nail-polish_dollop

It is shown more sheer and doesn’t have false advertisement. (Sorry the pictures are so small, pictures found here.) It is also described as a top coat in the description.

My Pictures & Thoughts

I painted this color over a pinkish white polish that I have had on for a few days. I decided to do this since it seems to be more of a top coat.

IMG_1412 IMG_1408

IMG_1411 IMG_1410

As you can see, I felt like this was a very pretty top coat. I think that it worked nicely over this polish. I don’t think I would like it by it self as the photo from Julep shows. It was really easy to apply which is a big improvement from February. Although, I did try applying the February one without an underneath color (I did use a base coat). I do think that they could have done a better job with the color and make it more vibrant and opaque instead of making it a top coat.

Comment and let me know what you think of this month’s birthstone polish. Have you tried any Julep polishes?

Julep Birthstone Collection Review: February

In case you didn’t know, Julep is a company that makes nail polish. They started this new collection called, “The Birthstone Collection” last month. I did purchase January’s birthstone and now I am doing my review on February’s birthstone.

You can check out January’s birthstone review here.

I was pretty excited to receive February’s color because purple is my favorite color. I had high hopes for this polish while purchasing it. I expected it to be gorgeous!

This polish comes in the normal Julep packaging with 8 ml of product.

The top of this polish is a gold color just like January’s polish.

This polish is named after Rosa Parks! This is something that I find cool! Each polish is named after a public figure that had their birthday in that month. Last month’s was Betty for Betty White. I really think that it is cool that they picked Rosa for Rosa Sparks because she was such an inspirational woman.

What Julep says about this polish, “Amethyst birthstone. Full-coverage multidimensional holographic glitter. The fabulous February jewel in our gold-capped Birthstone CollectionRosa – Amethyst for February is a glistening tribute to an inspirational woman whose light continues to shine, Rosa Parks. Born February 4.” More information here.

Here is a photo from Julep’s website.

As you can tell this polish color is gorgeous! I may be biased because of my love of purple.

Worst Ever

You may be wondering why such negative adjectives! This was honestly the worst polish I’ve tried. Yes, it is a glitter polish and those are harder to control. But, this was horrendous! It was so streaky. I would take the polish and as soon as I would go over with the brush, it would just wipe away the polish making it very streaky. I ended up giving up and was close to throwing the polish in the garbage. No I didn’t…but, I feel like that is where this polish belongs. Don’t get me wrong, I do love other Julep polishes. Maybe they forgot to add an ingredient in this one. I even checked the ratings on their website and there were a lot of 1 star reviews. Betty (January’s polish) was a little hard to control, but nothing like this! I was looking forward to completing this collection as the months went on, but now I’m not sure if I want to continue.

Here is 1 coat.

Two coats. As you can see on my pointer finger, it was hard to control. Looks awful!

I just feel like Rosa Parks, who was such an inspirational woman to society, deserved a more high quality polish!

Comment and let me know if you have tried this polish before because this one was a huge huge huge miss for me! I think I should return this very disappointing purchase!

Julep Birthstone Collection: January

Julep came out with a new collection, “Birthstone Collection” recently and I think that it is an amazing idea! This month is January (in case you forgot) so that means that the birthstone is garnet. I thought that this color was gorgeous and I wanted to try it out! But, the problem here is, now I will be tempted by February and every month after that until the end of this year. The shipping didn’t take too long and before I knew it my package was in the mailbox.

Here is it!!! Mirya (my shiba inu) tried to grab some of the black paper as I was opening it.

Comes in the normal Julep packaging and has the same amount of product as their other polishes (8 ml).

The top is a gold color which normally they’re black.

The color name is Betty.

And it was named after the amazing….

Photo: John Shearer

BETTY WHITE!!! Love her!

A closer look …

Now I have to warn you that I am horrible at painting my nails so these photos aren’t the best! I hate polishing my own nails!!!! This is also one of my first times using one of these types of polishes.

1 coat

My dog got a hold on the polish and put a few teeth marks into the cap. Yes, I know my thumb nail isn’t painted yet in that photo.

As you can tell I kind of got it all over. I thought that this polish was very hard to control. It was also very thick. But, it did dry super fast so that was I plus. The color is gorgeous and the photos don’t do it justice. I will pain my nails again in this color soon and hopefully put up another photo of them looking better. I am one of those people that like to wait to clean up the sides of the nails the next day. For some odd reason I think it is easier. This polish lasted pretty well the next day, but towards the end of the night I did have a tiny chip, but nothing compared to other polishes (Sephora X post ringing a bell). It was easy to fix since of the consistency of the polish. It was hard to take off with all that glitter! Next time I will have to use Jacquelyn from The Little Scottish Corner’s tip on removal!

All in all I thought this polish was ok. I did love the color, but hated the application. Julep is coming out with this new wand that attaches to the bottles of the polish and that helps people like me paint their nails without getting it everywhere! More information on that on their website:

I hope that the pile wand will help me with polishing my nails!!!

Formula X for Sephora Manicure System Review

Awhile ago I went into Sephora hearing about this new nail polish from Sephora called, “Formula X” that I wanted to check out.  I wasn’t sure if I wanted to buy it, but I at least wanted to look at it. I have tried many nail polishes brands and they always seem to chip in 1 to 2 days, often even less than a day! I know you’re wondering does this girl use a top coat? The answer is yes and I use a base coat too! I am a nurse so I do wash my hands quite frequently and use harsh soaps. But, I have a long stretches of days off at a time since I work 12 hour shifts and they still chip even if I’m not working. So when I saw Sephora Formula X the thought, “maybe this is the miracle nail polish I’ve been waiting for” went through my mind.  I even asked the worker there what she thought of it and if it lasted a long time. She said she loves it and that it lasts about 2 weeks. When I picked it up at store it was pretty new so there weren’t many online reviews. I decided that I would try it and decide for myself if it was up to the hype that the Sephora worker stated it was.

A four piece manicure set that includes formulas for cleansing, priming, and shine.

Sephora states, “Take your nails to the next level of perfection with The System Kit. Start with Nail Cleanser, an essential step that leaves nails free of residue for smooth polish application. Next, apply Base Coat, an advanced adhesive primer that forms a sticky layer, helping lacquer take hold. Add your Formula X lacquer of choice for whatever effect you’re after. And finish with super glossy Top Coat to protect your manicure with dazzling high shine.”

  • 0.4 oz Nail Cleanser
  • 0.4 oz Base Coat
  • 0.4 oz Top Coat
  • 0.4 oz Nail Color (of your choice)

  1. Pick up the Formula X kit online or at Sephora stores
  2. Pick out a nail polish color to add to the kit. This part was the hardest! They do have a wide array of colors!
  3. Manicure away!

Has a nice little convenient spot to add the nail polish color to make it the complete system.

IMG_0267.JPG (2)

The “magical” system with my nail color!

After looking at a ton of nail polish and swatching them on the sheets provided I chose A+ which is a raspberry color. I am wearing the color in the photos below.

IMG_0277.JPG (2)

Wow Sephora wins big on this one! They have a huge selection for just starting this Formula X system not that long ago! They have the classics and then the effects which oh my is there a lot of those!

  1. The System $32
  2. Formula X Top and Base Coat $10.50 (each)
  3. Formula X Classics $10.50
  4. Formula X Neutrals $10.50
  5. Formula X The Twenty-Two $55.00 (22 minis)
  6. Formula X The Effects $12.50

DEEP BREATH!!! Wow that was a lot of nail polish!

1. Start with the nail cleanser and lightly apply over the nail

2. Apply 1 layer of base coat covering the nail

3. Apply one to two coats of lacquer or nail color

4. Finish with top coat applying it over lacquer

IMG_0274.JPG (2)

So this system does take awhile because it has 4 steps so when it was being applied this is what I was thinking, “oh this should be strong!” I have a confession! I am terrible at painting my nails, mostly my right hand! So my aunt painted them for me!  She thought that it was pretty easy to apply. The brush is pretty standard. You can see it in the top coat photo above. It isn’t anything special! The top of the nail polish is a little bulky. If you take the white cap off of the lacquer there is a standard nail polish knob just like the rest of them! It’s just extra packaging, but I suppose it does make it look nice!

NO 😦

There is a chip! I figured that after that it would at least last a day if not longer! This was suppose to break my no chip record and it failed! OPI, Essie, Flower Beauty lacquer, and Julep even out lasted this one! Say, “Hi” to Mirya because she is in the photo 🙂 !

IMG_0276.JPG (2)

At this point I probably texted my mom and aunt this picture! They both said, “wow take it back!” I will add that I did not work during the time frame of wearing this nail polish.

I took it back! For a $32 dollar system to chip like that I didn’t think it was worth it! That was depressing! I honestly came to the realization that maybe nail polish isn’t for me? Maybe my nails hate nail polish! I mean there are a lot of good reviews on this system so why can’t mine be one of them?? But, I have seen quite a few bad reviews too!  I’ve tried quite a few top coats too! On my birthday I got a manicure at a salon with my mom..well…because it was my birthday! They used OPI and that did last 2-3 days so that was better, but I couldn’t even get 4 days or a week?

Deal with boring nails!

  • Amazing range of colors and finishes
  • From Sephora so build up those Sephora points!
  • Brush is easy to apply with
  • Exchanged this for……YAY Naked palette!

  • Expensive
  • Chips!!!

With that I leave you this….

Mirya and Molly relaxing on that super cold Minnesota day! Yes Molly looks a little goofy, but hey my cat is talented! Mirya sleeping and probably dreaming about her hatred of that sweatshirt she wears. Right now the temperature is -11 F, but earlier it was -2 F (a heat wave)! It is right now as I type this 2:01 AM! Getting ready for those overnight shifts!

One last thought on the weather:  I read that somewhere in the cold weather someone took a wet t-shirt and put it outside, it froze within minutes!

IMG_0387 IMG_0391.JPG (2)

Hope you enjoyed this post! Comment and let me know if you have tried this nail lacquer system! I want your feedback on this collection!!!
