Day 11: April 2014 Beauty Box 5 Shades of Beauty

IMG_1740

Time for another Beauty Box 5! This little turquoise box showed up in my mailbox on Wednesday and I of course couldn’t wait to rip into it. If you don’t know what BB5 is, it is a $12 a month subscription box that sends 5 samples of makeup, skincare, or any beauty type product. I have had 2 really bad boxes (my first 2) with tons of misses from BB5. I have been tempted to cancel, although I really did like last month’s box. With that, I had higher hopes for this box. I was thinking that it would be makeup based, since last month was mostly skincare. You can find more information on their box here.

Monthly Theme

This month’s theme is Shades of Beauty. It talks about taking time for yourself by enjoying your mornings and doing a little leisurely layering.

My Description Card

I really like that BB5 includes this description card. That has always been something that I haven’t liked about Ipsy.

My 5 Items

1) Bh Cosmetics California Collection Eyeshadow Palette Retail: $18.95 16 Eyeshadows/4 Face Powders
I was really disappointed with receiving this product. Nothing against BB5 or Bh Cosmetics with sending this out, but I already received this exact trio in an previous Ipsy bag. I do have a full sized San Francisco palette from this collection and honestly I hardly ever grab for that palette. I even featured it on my Perfect Palette Tag with it being the Biggest Regret. If you’re interested in seeing some of my palette collection you can check that tag out here. Now, I don’t want you thinking I’m hating on Bh Cosmetics because I do have some of their palettes that I love such as: Galaxy Chic and Take Me to Brazil. You can find my Galaxy Chic review here. Bh Cosmetics has nice affordable makeup products and I think they’re stepping up their game with their newer palettes, especially with packaging. Also, with their pricing, I have never seen a Bh Cosmetic palette full price. They always have sales. The San Francisco palette had the best colors out of the 3 whole sized choices in my opinion, with San Francisco being the most wearable. I would say the others are more for night out wear. I do like the colors that they decided to include in this little trio palette. I would take a picture of mine, but I don’t want to open this one and I’m not sure where mine from my Ipsy bag is at the moment. I might actually include this in my Giveaway as a little extra. Comment down below if you would like me to include this.

2) Nicka K New York Hydro Lipstick Retail: $4.99 for 0.12 oz
I am not a person that does bold lips very often, so this product was a little disappointing, yet really fun at the same time. I tend to wear more lip tints and lip glosses than lipsticks, but I am always up for trying new products. I really like that this lipstick is paraben free. I applied this lipstick and at first it was very bold, but as it wore off I liked the color even better. I can’t tell you much for longevity because I tested the color out a hour or so before bed and I ended up wiping it off when I washed all my makeup off. I can tell you that it applied nicely and wasn’t patchy at all.

3) Blum Naturals All Purpose Cleansing Wipes Retail: $2.49 for 30 wipes
Once again, I think of the post that Stephanie Wright wrote about makeup wipes and hoped these didn’t have that icky chemical that she speaks of. Every time I think of makeup wipes I think of that post. Good news Effie there isn’t that chemical: phenoxyethanol. But, it does have Ethyl Alcohol in it. In case you’re interested her post is here. My first thought when I opened these wipes is that they’re very thin and cheap looking. I wasn’t impressed. They do smell good so that is a plus, but still can you see how thin that wipe is??? I used it to wipe off my lipstick swatch and it performed pretty well, but I’m just not big on makeup wipes. They’re also made in China. I do like them when wiping off my swatches off my arm, but that is about it. It is definitely travel friendly and even comes with a clip. Also, these wipes don’t seem to separate from each other meaning that when I would pull a wipe out, they would just keep coming. I ended up having to take the red top off and push some of the wipes back into the container.

4) Jergens Natural Glow 3 Days to Glow Moisturizer Retail: $9.99 4 oz.

I don’t know how I feel about this product because I’m not a fan of these type of self-tanners. But, I will still have to try this out. I got my sample for medium to tan skin tones. I feel like there isn’t much product included to get the whole body evenly. But, once again I’ve never used this type of product. There are 3 packets, 1 for each of the 3 days. I also feel like this color might be a little too dark for me, I am more of a light to medium skin tone. I just think it would look unnatural looking to use that shade. But, oh well! Comment and let me know if you have tried this product or have tried any other self tanners.

 5) Bonne Bell Lip Definer Retail: $3.95 One Size
Once again, this product disappoints me. I don’t use lip liners ever. I got the color luscious lilac. I also felt like when I swatch this on my arm it was hard to get a nice color. If I would use lip liners, I would rather have a more creamy one. The color is pretty so I give it that. I remember getting lip smackers from this brand as a young girl.

Overall, I thought this BB5 was a big disappointment this month. I liked that it was makeup based, but not 1 of the products included got me excited. These products are all forgetful in my mind. If I didn’t already have that little trio from Bh Cosmetics, I might be a little excited over that. The lipstick is probably my favorite product I got this month. All in all, I’m debating on if I want to cancel my Beauty Box 5. I think I will give them 1 more month, if next month’s isn’t better they will chopped off the chopping block. They may have the same fate as which Birchbox had in my life. Here is to hoping my Ipsy Glam bag is more exciting. I just looked at my Glam Room a few minutes ago (which I usually don’t do) and I didn’t get the Benefit Lollitint sample! Of course not! I never get the products that I really want from Ipsy. I will be doing a post once my Ipsy bag comes. Comment and let me know what you thought of these products? Did you think your BB5 was a disappointment or did you like the products included?

  1. I have used the bh Cosmetics palette that you have listed in the post and it wasn’t horrible! I’ve also used Jergens Self Tanner, which I’m not a fan of ONLY because of the scent. I can’t get passed it. I’m also pretty pale and I really love to use St. Tropez. I use the lightest one and the smell isn’t horrible. Great post!
